For those of us in Baltimore, fall brings with it an entirely new palette of colors, leaves that have changed from their late summer green to rich combinations of ochre, orange, and red, mums that adorn our doorsteps and gardens with gold and amber, and hydrangeas that have supplanted their bold blues, violets, and pinks with their antique faded counterparts. The colors of fall surround us with warmth and comfort, and as we enjoy its cooler weather and look forward to holidays, I hope this warmth settles into your homes as well and that your stitching brings you peace. New Arrivals.

We are excited to share that we now have a New Arrivals page, on our website. Here you will find recently arrived canvases that are brand new to the needlepoint world, new to our shop, and restocks of popular designs that we have replenished. As with any canvas on our website, you may make a new canvas yours by ordering it on our website, emailing us at info@hillsideneedlearts.com, stopping by, or calling us at 443-548-3691 and leaving a message. We will get back to you promptly and set aside your canvas until you visit or we ship it to your home.

It’s Not Easy Being Green

A quick scroll through these canvases reminds us of the beauty - and complexity - to be found in nature’s most abundant color: green. As stitchers, we grapple with the nuances of leaves, trees, shrubs, and grass, trying to choose threads and stitches whose combination will do justice to nature’s palette. Colorful Threads.

Seventy-seven new colors of Planet Earth Fiber’s Essentials have just arrived in the shop, bringing our total to 204 colors of this shop favorite. A wool and silk blend, Essentials stitches up beautifully on 18 mesh, We love it because it comes in small bits - affordable 10-yard cards - which makes it perfect for smaller projects like belts and ornaments, or for use in little areas on larger canvases, and its broad array of colors makes it perfect for shading or stitching that spot where you need just the right color.

Stitch in Technicolor.

Vibrant stitching can bring us joy and foster our growth as artists. Will we choose colors that match as closely as possible those on the canvas, or will we make an occasional change, dramatic or small? Will we use different stitches, and how will that impact our thread choice? Do we want to use threads with different textures or threads that are characterized by subtle or pronounced variegation? Choosing threads for a colorful canvas can be exciting and, sometimes, daunting. We are always happy to help.

Thanksgiving holiday: The shop will be closed Wednesday, November 23 - Friday, November 25 and will reopen Saturday, November 26 at 10 a.m.

Holiday pop-up: Shop for both old and new favorites on Saturday, December 3 during regular shop hours (10-3).
