Dear Friends,

I hope this note finds you in the midst of a relaxing and restorative summer. Here at the shop we have been thinking sunny thoughts and about how we might join you in celebrating the season. To that end, we would like to announce a giveaway. When you come into the shop and spend $200 or more, we will gift you one of our straw totes to use on your next beach trip (or to carry your needlepoint around town). You might decide to stitch a small canvas to adorn your bag or use it as is. In any case, we hope you enjoy using it.

In other news, we have taken some time to think about how we use thread choices to add texture and interest to our projects and I would like to share some of our thoughts with you. Finally, I want to share an important shop scheduling note. Be sure to read through to the end so you are up to date on our schedule.

As always, I look forward to seeing you soon.

All the best,

Special threads we love to use:

While many of you understandably enjoy stitching with your favorite cotton, silk, wool, or silk and wool combination, enriching your canvas by mixing textures, both visually and to the touch, is easier than you think. Here are a few canvases that we think offer interesting opportunities to diversify your thread choices.

Elizabeth the Lamb

This 13 mesh canvas measures 12 x 10 inches.

This lamb would come to life with a few interesting thread choices. A bundle of Silk Road Fiber’s Straw Silk color palette in greens would be perfect for her wreath of cotton bolls, and we imagine stitching the lamb herself in Rainbow Gallery’s fluffy angora and soft velvet for the insides of her ears. And why not make the background, or sky, more interesting and realistic by using an overdye such as Planet Earth’s Pepper Pot Handpaint (silk) or Dinky Dyes’s Jumbuck (wool and silk).

Woven or Burden stitch in Silk Road Fibers Straw Silk would make this picnic basket seem almost 3-D.

Imagine the seagulls in this canvas coming to life with Rainbow Gallery’s fuzzy Wisper for their feathers and Planet Earth’s Pepper Pot for their beaks and legs. Here, too, we would probably choose an overdye like Gloriana or Caron’s Waterlilies to make the sky more realistic.

Gulls

This 13 mesh canvas measures 4.5 x 4.5 inches square.

Transport yourself to Provence and bring these lavender fields to life with french knots, which are surprisingly easy to make in Edmar’s Boucle.
